Most submersible sump pumps last 7–10 years. SW Ohio’s spring rain season — particularly the high-volume events that run the East Fork and Little Miami drainages up — puts significant annual stress on residential pumps. If your unit is approaching that window, or you’ve never replaced the pump that came with the house, have it evaluated before spring. A pump that fails during a storm costs far more than a planned replacement.
Strongly recommended. The highest-risk scenario in SW Ohio is a severe thunderstorm that knocks out power at the same moment it’s flooding your basement. A primary pump with no backup goes silent exactly when you need it most. Battery backup systems typically run 8–12 hours without grid power — long enough to get through most outage events. If your basement has ever taken water, backup is not optional.
Not necessarily. Basement flooding can happen because the pump was overwhelmed by inflow volume (undersized), because the discharge line froze or was blocked, because the float switch stuck, or simply because there was no power during the storm. FlowMax diagnoses the actual cause before recommending a replacement — sometimes the pump is fine and the problem is upstream.
Ohio requires sump pump discharge to terminate at least 10 feet from the foundation and directed away from neighboring properties. Improper discharge routing is one of the most common problems we find — water discharging too close to the house re-enters the soil and cycles back into the pit. This makes the pump run constantly, shortens its life dramatically, and doesn’t actually remove water from your property.
Pedestal pumps sit above the pit with the motor out of the water — easier to access, but noisier and generally less powerful. Submersible pumps sit fully submerged inside the pit — quieter, more powerful, and better suited for the high-volume events common during Clermont County’s spring rain season. If your pump runs continuously during heavy rain or cycles on and off every few minutes, the pit may be undersized for the volume entering it.
